101 adventures in 1001 days!

561 days

Well. It’s been quite some time since I last popped in to say hello…

Nothing too exciting going on here. However, today I was inspired by my friend Bethanie and her blog to keep on keeping on with my 101 list. As of today, I have 561 days left, and I am 12% complete…

I think I have some work to do.

Drum roll please…..so far I have completed:

7. Give a handmade gift.

12. Send a handwritten letter.

14. Go to Texas.

16. Eliminate non-fitting clothing from my wardrobe. (Although I could probably do this one again!)

21. Ask someone out on a date. (This one could be up for debate, but I’m going to count it!)

28. Answer the “50 Questions That Will Free Your Mind.” (Let me tell you, they don’t do all that much for freeing your mind.)

35. Turn my phone off for a week.

53. Make a wish at 11:11 on 11/11/11

66. Make a quilt

Here is a picture of me with my t-shirt quilt I made in about 2 days when I had just moved home and was still unemployed, therefore had far too much time on my hands. Making this quilt was more productive than watching 5 seasons of 30 Rock in about a week and a half, but I still managed to do both.

Some items that are “in progress” (but I have perhaps been slacking on a bit…)

1. Learn to cook 10 meals

6. Send 10 postcards via postcrossing.com (I have sent 6, and I have five more ready to go to the post office tomorrow morning! By the way, everyone should check out this website, it’s totally awesome and fun!!)

18. Let my hair grow long

19. Read a book a month (This one hasn’t been going all that well lately…)

31. Collect 101 postcards

51. Create 10 playlists, with 10 songs, of 10 different emotions, finalize, and put on cds
55. Complete the 5000 Question Survey (see previous post)
63. Listen to Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time
I wish I could say I have more progress than that, but I still have a while to go. I just need to get my butt in gear! (And like 39 says, I need to start putting away $5 for every task completed!!)

As far as my list goes? I still only have 77 items on it…if anybody has any suggestions for new ideas, please, let me know!

Update

I know I haven’t written in forever, to those three of you who might read this. A lot has happened in the past few months, way too much to even really get into, so I’ll just start from this week.

My time at CAP is coming to an end soon, and there are really no words to describe how that is making me feel. It’s hard to remember all the faces I’ve seen, all the windows I’ve replaced, all the ramps I’ve built, and all the lives that have touched mine. But this week was a good trip back to memory lane. Three of the houses we did minor jobs at this week were jobs I had previously been at within my first month or so at CAP. People I had completely forgotten about, because it was long ago, and not much time was spent at each location. It was crazy to think of the person I was two years ago when I was first at these jobs, and how far I’ve come and who I am now. Every person I’ve lived with is now a part of me, whether I like it or not. It’s like a line in a Billy Gilman song, (Yes, I’m quoting Billy Gilman, he made more songs than his one hit) “I’m not me anymore. I’m all of us and a part of you.” I feel like that perfectly describes what happens when you live in community. You become a little bit of everyone. You’re still you. But You is now a little different. Anyways…not much else to say for now. We are heading out to go bowling for Jordan’s last night in KY!

Hopefully I’ll post again soon :)

throwback.

So I suppose this is going to be a throwback post of sorts. I was talking to my friend Michelle the other day about high school. All in all, high school wasn’t awful. It wasn’t traumatizing, but they weren’t the best days of my life either. Michelle and I were talking about some of our favorite memories from high school, and we both decided all, or most anyway, of our favorite memories revolved around school musicals, madrigals, choir, the dance show, and other various performance activities.  Then I decided, why should Michelle and I have all the fun? And so here is one of my favorite memories from high school. You may not find it funny, or entertaining, but that’s ok. Because it’s special to me, and the members involved :)

My senior year, I was a troubadour in madrigals. Michelle was a troubadour as well, along with our friend Greg. We weren’t exactly the most dedicated, so I guess it’s a good thing that none of us were entrusted with larger roles for the dinners. Rehearsals were always a fun event with us involved. Fun and productive didn’t go together it seemed, so we always picked the fun route. One rehearsal I remember particularly well, perhaps because I took pictures of it happening, Greg, Michelle and I decided to see what size band locker we could fit ourselves in. If you don’t know what I mean by band locker…A band locker is simply a locker designed to fit an instrument in. So they have different sizes, because a tuba obviously needs a larger space than a flute. But anyways. Instead of rehearsing, we decided to stuff ourselves in band lockers.

I wouldn’t ask us if we were very good at singing our songs. But I now know that I’m not made to fit inside a trumpet locker.

Hillbillys, Hoe-downs, and Various Things Fried.

I was convinced tonight, somehow, by my family that I should write a book about my adventures in Kentucky. I’m tossing around names for my book, and I think I’m at a good starting place :)

Even if my family and friends are the only people who ever read my book, which probably wont end up happening anyway, it would be fun to have my experience in Kentucky documented.

I basically hate writing. Proof? Check out how often I update my blog haha. But I think it’s not a terrible idea.

Just a picture to let you ponder on for the day.

Oh the things I find under houses at work…

Hello there.

Hey! It’s been a while since my last post. I feel like a ton has happened over the past month or so, but honestly, I can’t really remember most of it. One crazy thing that has happened since my last post…my Krazy Christmas Travels.

It started with me leaving Kentucky via overnight train to head to Illinois for about two days. Then my mom, dad, and I flew to Denver, to drive to Colorado Springs to attend my sister’s graduation from Focus on the Family Institute. She knew my parents were coming, but she had no idea that I was going to be there! It was great to surprise her :) We’d been planning it since October, and she had no idea. We were then in Colorado for less than 24 hours, before we hopped back on a plane and flew to Texas. We spent Christmas in Texas this year, because my cousin Laura was getting married a few days before Christmas, and we haven’t spent Christmas in Texas in years…It was great to see all of my dad’s side of the family. The wedding was beautiful, and the reception was tons of fun :) We then spent the rest of the time in Texas visiting family, friends, and old neighbors. I was wearing shorts one day, and it was the middle of December!!! I forgot how much I loved Texas, and how friendly everyone is there. So now I have the dilemma of…living in Kentucky, or Texas? I just cant decide. It was an amazing trip, and I can’t wait to go/move back. Then after we spent 10 days in Texas, we all hop back on yet another plane and fly back to Illinois, and I spend, once again, about two days in Sycamore. I then get on another overnight train to whisk me back to Kentucky. Pheewwwww. That was a whole lot of traveling, in a short amount of time. Once back in Kentucky, I spent new year’s eve up at Camp Shawnee, with former counselors and former CAP volunteers. It was a good ole time filled with Ke$ha, Dutch Blitz, and laughter. Now I’m back in the Johnson House, and back to normal CAP life.

Since being back after Christmas, house drama has greatly minimized, which I couldn’t be more thankful for. Before we all left of the holidays, things were very tense, and I honestly did not want to come back after I left. But now that I’m here things are looking up, finally. It only took about six months…hopefully things keep going up, and we don’t regress to our old patterns. But anyways. Like previously mentioned. New life dilemma? Where to move/go to school at. We have a snow day today, so I’m finally sending in everything for all my college applications. I know it’s kinda late…so once I hear back from everywhere I will have to make a decision quickly I suppose. We’ll see what happens.

I’ll leave you with a few pictures from my holidays just for fun :)

Mountains in Colorado Springs!

The place where we played bingo one night…

Dad, Me, Sister, Mom, and Auntie Sophia. (Yes Auntie Sophia is the dog…)

It’s been a crazy week! Bethanie and I made the journey to Okemos, Michigan with Kevin to celebrate thanksgiving McCullough style. Here’s a little recap of all our crazy adventures during the week.

We head out on Tuesday morning around nine or so, and we are making really good time, and everything was going so well, until we stop in Anna, Ohio to eat lunch at Wendy’s. We walk out to the car, and this sight awaits us, followed by Bethanie saying, “Uh Kev, you have a flat tire…”

Luckily, Kevin knew how to change a tire! But. The tire was rusted to the car, so we couldn’t get it off. Luckily, Kevin and Bethanie both have AAA. But. The AAA man couldn’t fix the tire, so he put the spare on, which happened to be quite flat. Luckily, we were in a Wendy’s parking lot, right by a gas station to fill up the tire with air. But! The gas station didn’t have an air pump. Luckily, a creepy man came walking towards our car to tell us our spare was flat, and he told us of a place that fixed semi tires just up the road less than a mile away. We bravely venture there, and luckily they can fix the tire for us, and luckily, we made it out alive! It was a very sketchy place, and Kevin was convinced one of the employees was an ex-con. We were planning our escape route, when they started jacking up the car, WITH US STILL IN IT!!! We were stuck. But luckily we didn’t need our escape plan after all :) Rewind for a brief second, and let’s go back to that Wendy’s parking lot. Bethanie and I ask Kevin when the last time was that he got his oil changed or that he even checked his oil. He couldn’t really say. So Bethanie and I checked it, and it was below low. Buddy, Kevin’s car, was in sad shape. I walked over to the gas station to get Buddy some oil, and us some scratch off tickets for maybe a spurt of good luck. That didn’t happen. But I think we were having a better time than the gas station attendants. Someone had just stolen 50 dollars of gas! We finally get back on the road and get to Kevin’s house, eat dinner and hang around a bit, then off to bed.

Wednesday I did something very uncharacteristic for me, I got up early and went running with Bethanie! I’m typically very opposed to physical activity, but it was a good feeling. We went to a Michigan State volleyball game on Wednesday, which was pretty fun. The power went out for a bit, so they played some music and it was basically a random dance party for 15 minutes. Later in the evening, we went to the ice rink to watch Kevin and his dad play some pickup hockey, but before we got there, the ladies in the family let Bethanie and I stop to get some Dunkin Donuts!!!

Dunks!!!! <3

I unwisely got a very large iced gingerbread latte to drink in an ice rink. What a terrible idea, but wonderful at the same time! It was fun watching Kevin, his dad, and his friends play hockey. I dare say it was one of the first times they had a cheerleader at a late night pick up game!

Thursday we watched some football and ate waaaay too much food. Big surprise there :)

Friday we went to the ice rink for open skating, and the rink was completely empty!!! It was so much fun, until Kevin’s aunt fell and broke her ankle… But up until that point it was pretty amazing. We went to Jimmy John’s after for lunch, which made me just about the happiest camper alive!

Saturday was quite a busy day. We watched the Michigan State football game, thank goodness they won! After the game was over we went on an errand running spree which included, but is not limited to, Target, Meijer, Hobby Lobby (aka Hobby Hobby), and the Verizon store. We later got some more Dunks, and we went to a local ice cream store called Tasty Twist, that has superman ice cream!!! Superman ice cream was one of the highlights of my childhood I dare say. Natually I had to pose like Superman with my cone :)

We wrapped up our evening by playing some euchre. Bethanie and I beat Kevin and his father, which I’m sure I will never let Kevin forget :)

* A little side note. Bethanie and I had to share a bed the whole week, bless her heart. I’m a terrible person to share a bed with. I creepily laugh in my sleep, I talk in my sleep, I hog the covers, and I move a lot. So while she had the misfortune of having to share a bed with me, she also had the misfortune of getting a bit of insomnia around 4 am today. But luckily for her, I decided to talk about whatever the heck I was dreaming about, and quite frankly, I’m not sure I want to remember what it was. I’m sure there were more funny moments to share about the week, but I’ll leave you with this direct quote from sleeping Caitlin to ponder on. And don’t worry, I’m just as confused by it as you. What was I dreaming about when I said in my sleep,

“Damn you, and your prosthetic leg.”

We may never know.

A new meaning for “cat food”

Today was an interesting day…

It all started last night when Kelly, Jordan, and I stayed up late. (Well not late for them, but about two hours after I go to bed for me) So I get up this morning feeling exceptionally tired, but thankful that I only have to go to work one day this week due to leaving for Thanksgiving. On our way to work, we stop at a gas station to fill up the truck, and I decide to get a coffee/energy drink thing. BIG mistake. I was so loopy for a while, luckily we weren’t doing any intense work today. But I came down from my cloud really quick when the sweet old 92 year old lady whose house we were working at told us she was cooking us lunch. I had previously stated on Friday that I would never eat anything that came out of that kitchen, because it was pretty dirty, and not very well kept. Well today, I ate my words, and possibly a cat.

D told us she was making us sloppy joes, potato salad, soup beans, coleslaw, chocolate cake, and cherry pie. We had to stop her from making cornbread for us too. Now don’t get me wrong, this is one of the sweetest ladies you will ever meet, and she had good intentions in making us lunch, but we definitely did not want to eat any of what she was serving.

As she was preparing some of the food, she pulls the potato salad out of the fridge, and shows Kelly and Jordan the crust it had formed on it from not being covered in the fridge. Strike one. She then just stirs and it serves it to us later. The sloppy joes weren’t too sketchy looking. We watched her make them for the most part, we just missed the part when she put the meat in the pan. Thus, we don’t know where it came from. While we were eating, I realized I hadn’t seen her cat, Pussers, running around like he had been the past two days, and mention to Jordan and Kelly we were potentially eating her cat. After we finish eating, Jordan was putting away the ice cream she had served us, and found this ground beef in the freezer. Strike two and three.

Regardless of if it was cat meat, or meat similar to this…I was instantly queasy. Then came the dessert. The chocolate cake was the only redeeming part of the meal. It was a little overdone, but I’m not complaining. I’m actually quite thankful. Kelly saved the day with the cake. D was about to stir the cake mix with a spoon that had been on her counter for who knows how long, complete with fuzzies and cobwebs, when Kelly steps in to wash it and hand her a clean one. But the cherry pie… I know in ball games you only get three strikes until your out, but we gave D four. Jordan put a small bite in his mouth, and his face promptly turns into one of disgust. I decide to be brave and try it. Big mistake. The cherry pie filling tasted strangely like salmon, which she had fixed for her cat the other day, and the pie crust, well it’s hard to describe the pie crust. We later found out she had bought the pie crust on her last shopping trip. She told us on friday she hadn’t been to the store in months probably. So needless to say, the fact that I am still alive and not bent over a toilet by now is a miracle.

I was also very proud of myself for stomaching sloppy joes and potato salad all at the same time. Two things I really cant stand eating even in normal circumstances. And the the icing on the cake? D wouldn’t even eat the food she served us. If a cook isn’t willing to eat her own cooking, you know you’re in for it.

I feel like I’ve said enough in this post, but in case you really wanted to know, I had a pretty fabulous hike this weekend! Also, I’m heading to Michigan tomorrow to celebrate Thanksgiving McCullough style with Kevin + Family, and Bethanie. Adios for now

:)

So here’s a little update on what’s going on in my life.

Today Jen Z, Jess, Carolyn and I went to University of the Cumberlands so I could go on a campus visit and such, also to see Jen B, and Sam, two of our old housemates. It was a lot of fun getting away from the house for a day, just the four of us, to have some good times and relax. We also got to eat at Sonic, which automatically makes any day better :) A funny part of today was when we were walking along in downtown Williamsburg, and we turned a street corner Jen B was talking about going to the library last thursday and she said, “and then I almost stepped on this dead bird”

But don’t worry friends, she said it had been moved since thursday out of the direct pathway of the sidewalk. We were all laughing so hard. So naturally, I had to capture the moment on film.

Work lately had been pretty stressful. I’m tired of my job, so it’s hard to get up each morning and go to work, and it also sucks, because sometimes I don’t want to come home from work either. It’s a problem. But anyways. I worked with Jorlley this week. (AKA Jordan and Kelly) One day tensions were mounting and tempers were starting to flare. I was being careless, and broke a piece of trim, which pushed Jordan over the edge. He then yelled at me, “Turtle! Use common sense!!!” To which, I promptly started crying. (I would also like to mention it was the second time that day that Jordan made me cry.) Needless to say, I was very thankful for the weekend.

Kelly, Jordan, and I decided to go on a hike up the side of the mountain by our house, and we did it friday after work. It was pretty fun :) Our version of a hike is more of scaling up the side of a mountain and walking around the ridge looking at cool rocks and stuff. It was a good way to end the work week. Also this week, Jorlley and I went to Front Porch Pickin, which is always a good time, which brings me to another fun point. Jordan is trying to teach me how to play the banjo, which is pretty entertaining. I was also practicing my mandolin skillz the other night, which was just sad and pathetic. I decided I need to pick one instrument and stick with it, but it’s so fun knowing how to play a little bit of everything!

Also! Today at the Cumberlands, we went to a pretty sweet park by the football field, which has the most terrifying slide I had ever been on in my entire life. It was massive!!!

Here is a view of the stairs going up to the slide. There was like four flights of stairs!!!

Anyways. I’m sure there is more I could write about, but we are watching a freaky movie at the house right now, called The Village. It’s dumb, but it’s kinda scary. I wouldn’t reccomend it to anyone. It’s confusing, and really weird.

Peace out!
